I’ve always had pretty dry skin, but over the last few weeks it has gotten out of control. My hands have been so dry that my skin has been peeling and cracking, splitting and bleeding. It’s not comfortable at all. My husband said my hands look 40 years older than the rest of me. So, I decided it was time to take matters into my own hands. Hehe.
I’ve been making my own lotion bars for a year or so, but even that recipe wasn’t enough. I switched to just coconut oil. Not enough. Then I tried coconut oil with essential oils. Nope. I tried applying the essential oils neat. Not enough “spread”. So, I asked around for suggestions, did some digging in my pantry, combined a couple of lotion recipes and added an ingredient I hadn’t thought to try. And, voila! My skin hasn’t felt this good in…maybe ever. I’m in LOVE! I wish I had thought to take a before picture, because the difference is shocking after only a couple of uses.
Don’t be intimidate by the ingredients if they’re new to you. I order what I can’t find locally from Amazon and I’ve including affiliate links to make it easy for you to find exactly what you need. This is super simple to make and takes only a few minutes. All of the ingredients are shelf stable also, so this body butter will be good until it’s gone- and a little bit goes a long way. One batch makes two jelly jars full, so you can keep half and gift half!
Ingredients
- 1 cup organic avocado oil (I find mine at Costco)
- 1/2 cup organic extra virgin coconut oil (I find mine at Costco)
- 1/4 cup organic cocoa butter
- 1/4 cup shea butter
- 1/2 cup organic beeswax
- 10 drops doTERRA frankincense essential oil
- 10 drops doTERRA myrrh essential oil
- 5 drops doTERRA geranium essential oil
Instructions
- In a small saucepan, melt together the avocado oil, coconut oil, shea and cocoa butters, and beeswax. The beeswax I buy comes in pastilles (little beads), which makes for easy measuring. The butters come in large blocks, so I just cut off thin slices and chop, then measure.
- Once everything is melted together and smooth with no grit or lumps, remove from heat. Allow to cool for about 5-10 minutes, or until you feel good about transferring it to your blender.
- I use a blender for this recipe for two reasons: I've used a mixer to whip body butters before and it's nice, but not such a different consistency that it's worth it to me. Secondly, this recipe contains a pretty large amount of beeswax, so once it cools it is fairly hard (but "melts" quickly on the skin), so making sure there are no lumps or grit and that it's all very well incorporated is important to me so it doesn't separate as it cools.
- After you transfer the mixture to the blender, add the essential oils. You want to wait until this step to add the oils so that you don't cook out the medical properties of the essential oils. I use the Sauce setting on my blender. Basically you're just blending it for about 30 seconds until it's smooth and luscious.
- Transfer to a glass container with a lid. (I used two- one to keep in my kitchen and one to keep in my master bathroom).
