Earlier this week I went to visit a friend. She and I both have 1 year-olds, so we got to catch up while the babies fought over toys played together. She’s also pregnant with her second sweet baby, so we chatted a lot about birth plans and nursery decor, midwives and pregnancy cravings.
I giggled a bit inside as she described in vivid detail an intense craving she’d been having for a very specific type of creamy ginger salad dressing often served in japanese restaurants. She may or may not have called half a dozen restaurants asking what kind of dressing they serve. (Hey- anyone who’s ever been pregnant can attest to the fact that pregnancy does some pretty intense things to the appetite!)
As I was leaving, she handed me a bottle of kefir she didn’t think she’d finish before it went bad. After the conversation about the salad dressing, I knew exactly what to do with the kefir she gave me!
Are you familiar with kefir? Kefir is a cultured probiotic drink. Generally speaking, kefir can be water- based, or milk-based. Both versions are becoming easier and easier to find in stores, with the milk-based version being the easiest to find.
Both versions are also easy to make. Milk kefir is similar to drinkable yogurt. In the case of these salad dressings, I’m referring to plain, unflavored milk kefir.
Basic Probiotic Salad Dressing Recipe:

2 teaspoons coconut aminos (or soy sauce, if you’re not gluten-free)
Cilantro Lime Dressing:

3 tablespoons fresh minced cilantro or 3 drops doTERRA cilantro essential oil
1/4 teaspoon black pepper or 1 drop doTERRA black pepper essential oil

I hope you enjoy! What are some other creative ways you use kefir?

That is a great idea! I think I’ll try adding some cultured buttermilk to my next salad dressing, since I don’t do kefir.
These look so good! I pinned this for the future!
Such a wonderful idea! I must try this.
In a small mason jar I put a little maple syrup (the real stuff) and kefir, that’s it. Stash it later for a snack. I’ve got everyone at my office asking me what the milky stuff is? One person said it tasted like cinnamon role icing
